Energy efficiency underlines Avendale’s roof work in November 2024

As energy performance awareness and demand increases within the commercial sector, Avendale continues to see an increase in requests for thermally insulated metal roof systems, replacement or over-clad, both producing great results and exceeding client expectations. Avendale’s history and quality assurance saw this roofing project through in record time, accompanied by some innovative retrofit upgrades.

As energy performance awareness and demand increases within the commercial sector, Avendale continues to see an increase in requests for thermally insulated metal roof systems, replacement or over-clad both producing great results and exceeding client expectations. Avendale’s history and quality assurance saw this roofing project through in record time, accompanied by some innovative retrofit upgrades.

A key deliverable for the project, was to work within the limitations of an existing outdated steel structure whilst modernising and proposing new designs and techniques to offer a robust, maintenance free solution.

Phase 2 of this project, included new insulated metal roof sheet full over-clad and double-glazed electric window pack to be installed to the upper level. The requirements of the client focused on thermally upgrading the roof for the winter months, whilst the windows offered a natural air flow option for the warmer periods. An efficient way to save on heating and Air conditioning costs through the year.

Improved flow of storm water away from the roof was a requirement Avendale needed to address, the existing design was poor, overflowing and integral to the structure of the building, offering limited repair options. Avendales solution was to re-line the existing gutter channels with galvanized U channel, including correct flow angles for faster water removal.

A maintenance free custom leaf guard design was implemented to the gutters using high impact polypropylene mesh and PVC batten. The flow of storm water will be guaranteed all year round without the need for the client to perform regular costly gutter clearance.

The team completed this stage of the project with impressive efficiency. The design team did a great job implementing solutions that brought this building back to life. The main challenge for me was to ensure the site operated in a completely safe manner around a working business and young/vulnerable people. Thanks to my team and the client, full compliance was met and a smooth transition from site set up to completion was achieved.

Driving carbon emission down

To significantly reduce our carbon emissions during the project we implemented a green construction policy endeavouring to look at the provenance and sustainability of materials as well as effective waste management/ recycling. On site considerations included the use of local roofing suppliers for short deliver drops, Recycling old roof tiles, solar panel site lighting, Electric machinery, energy conservation and water conservation/ pollution control.
